UK Fuel Card Guide

What are fuel cards? The complete UK guide.

Whether you run a haulage fleet, a private hire operation, a service van or a one-man trade, a fuel card can cut what you pay for diesel every week. Here's everything you need to know.

What is a fuel card?

A fuel card — sometimes called a fleet card — is a dedicated payment card used to purchase fuel at forecourts across the UK. Unlike a standard debit or credit card, a fuel card gives the holder access to a pre-negotiated weekly rate, rather than whatever price is displayed on the forecourt pump.

This weekly rate is determined by the fuel card network — a company that has negotiated bulk pricing agreements with fuel suppliers on behalf of all their cardholders. The larger the network, the more buying power they have, and the lower the rate they can secure.

Fuel Vertu works across multiple card networks simultaneously. Every week, we compare the rates available across those networks and publish the single best rate to our customers — so you're never stuck on a worse deal because of which network you happen to be on.

How do fuel cards work?

1

You apply

Tell us about your business and vehicles. Most applications are approved within 24–48 hours with no complex credit checks for smaller operators.

2

We negotiate your rate

Each Monday, we publish the best available weekly diesel rate from across our network of card providers. You always know your rate before you fill up.

3

Fill up & save

Your driver presents the card at the forecourt. The transaction is logged, VAT invoiced automatically, and the saving vs pump price is captured every time.

Pump price vs network rate — what's the difference?

Pump price cards

  • Pay whatever the forecourt displays
  • Price fluctuates daily with no warning
  • Hard to budget or forecast fuel costs
  • No week-on-week rate transparency

Network rate cards (fuel cards)

  • Fixed weekly rate, agreed every Monday
  • Up to 20p per litre below pump price
  • Predictable fuel costs for easy budgeting
  • Full transparency — rate published each week

The difference can be substantial. A driver filling 500 litres per week saving just 10p per litre saves £2,600 per year. At 20p per litre, that's £5,200 per vehicle, per year — money that stays in your business, not at the pump.

Who qualifies for a fuel card?

Almost any UK business that uses vehicles for commercial purposes can apply for a fuel card through Fuel Vertu. There is no minimum fleet size. We work with:

  • Sole traders with a single van
  • Private hire drivers (licensed or fleet)
  • Haulage and freight operators
  • Plumbers, electricians, and tradespeople
  • Mobile service companies
  • Courier and delivery businesses
  • Construction companies
  • Agricultural businesses
  • Hospitality and catering operators
  • Any business with a regular fuel spend

Applications require basic business details and a credit check (for larger fleets). Sole traders and small businesses are typically processed on a pay-as-you-go or direct debit basis with minimal friction. Most businesses are approved and receiving cards within a working week.
